Why Email Isn’t Enough to Manage Projects and Teams

Despite all our whining and complaining, email is a terrific tool. Stop laughing, it is. The problem with many teams and the way we manage them is that it’s the tool that gets used (and abused) the most. People leave long email threads that make it a bear to search. We file the same email under different names. We’re working with different versions of the same document, resulting in wasted time, rework and frustration.

Whether managing projects or your functional team, information just doesn’t flow the way email works. So what can you use to help people store information, access it as needed and help everyone find what they need when they need it? A collaboration tool that stores, accesses, organizes and creates a logical picture of the whole project is what we really need.

Death Of A Tagline

Storagezilla - When I started with EMC we had one hardware platform, Symmetrix, four software products for that platform and the CEO was Michael C. Ruettgers.

Mike came from the defence industry, was the product manager for more than a few city destroying weapons, had an easy smile and a ruthlessness which put sales people on edge even when he was smiling at them.

It was described to me once as feeling “…like a Great White Shark swam up along side you, gave you a wink and then quietly swam off into the darkness to rip someone else to shreds.”

Exchange Server 2010 – Keep In-house or BPOS?

Exchange Server 2010 (E2K10) continues to be a baffling phenomenon. We have a raft of features to make E2K10 easier to manage when running at large scale. Integration with the Microsoft ecosystem (ADS, SharePoint, Outlook/Office) is of course excellent. We even hear with the use of the new DAG (replicated mailbox databases) that backups are a thing of the past – don’t need to backup E2K10 apparently.

I have worked with all versions of Exchange, including when it was still MS Mail 3.x. During the years I have been a big fan of this messaging system – mainly due to its integration ability and use of database technology (well JET actually) to provide many features that were novel at the time of introduction. E2K10 is no exception. However, with the rise of the Cloud, and services such as Microsoft’s Business Productivity Online Suite - BPOS or other hosted Exchange service providers, the messaging is becoming increasingly unclear.

Google Chromebook: Business Model By Ideology - Forrester

CEOs must assiduously guard against ideology. They should avoid choosing a path for their business based on a rigid worldview. Ideology has killed many great industries, from railroads to word processors to fax machines. It interferes with logical, market-sensitive thinking, leading CEOs to ignore, and ultimately offend, their customers.

Google's announcement of its Chromebook constitutes a real-time case study. Chromebook hinges on the idea that we no longer need local storage or applications on our computers -- that the Web can handle most tasks.

Infrastructure is Boring: The Next Phase

The VMware keynote at EMC World 2011 focused on defining the move into a "post-PC" world. It's been a fairly common refrain for VMware for the last couple years, but in this particular keynote I got the impression that we seem to be preparing for a world where the hypervisor isn't front and center as well. That's not to say that the hypervisor isn't important or critical as the foundation of the platform, but well, it's not very sexy any more. Personally, I think VMware has done a great job of continuing to innovate at the hypervisor level, far more so than any other provider in the market, and it shows in the depth and breadth of their offering; you don't get an 85% market-share by accident.

Microsoft board backs Ballmer over Einhorn

Reuters - Microsoft Corp's (MSFT.O) board stood behind Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer on Thursday, defending its longtime leader after influential hedge fund manager David Einhorn touched off a debate by calling for his dismissal.

The fund manager, who made his name warning about Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc's (LEHMQ.PK) financial health before the investment bank's collapse, accused Ballmer on Wednesday evening of being stuck in the past, launching the sharpest attack yet by a high-profile investor against the company's leadership.

Einhorn's comments, which echo what some investors have said for some years in private, caused a stir on Wall Street and helped Microsoft shares climb 2 percent on Thursday to $24.67.

"His continued presence is the biggest overhang on Microsoft's stock," Einhorn told fellow fund managers at the annual Ira Sohn Investment Research Conference in New York.

Hedge fund star Einhorn calls for Microsoft's Ballmer to go

Reuters - Influential hedge fund manager David Einhorn has called for Microsoft Corp Chief Executive Steve Ballmer to step down, saying the world's largest software company's leader is stuck in the past.

"His continued presence is the biggest overhang on Microsoft's stock," Einhorn said in reference to Ballmer.

The comments by outspoken Einhorn, who made his name warning about Lehman Brothers' financial health before the investment bank's collapse, are the most pointed yet from a high-profile investor against Microsoft's leadership.

Microsoft shares, which have been static for over a decade, gained 0.87 percent in after-hours trading after Einhorn's comments, the most of any Dow Jones industrial average component.

The software giant, which was the largest U.S. company by market value in the late 1990s, has since been overtaken by Apple Inc and IBM in market value, and is no longer seen as a dominating force in technology after a failure to capitalize on new Internet and mobile computing markets.

HTC Pays Microsoft $5 Per Android Phone, Says Citi

Microsoft gets $5 for every HTC phone running Android, according to Citi analyst Walter Pritchard, who released a big report on Microsoft this morning.

Microsoft is getting that money thanks to a patent settlement with HTC over intellectual property infringement.

Microsoft is suing other Android phone makers, and it's looking for $7.50 to $12.50 per device, says Pritchard.

We knew hardware companies were paying Microsoft, we just didn't know how much. (In October Steve Ballmer said, "Android has a patent fee. It's not like Android's free.")

Pritchard says we can expect more legal activity to pick up around Android in the coming months because "Google appears to have very little IP to defend itself with."

New NetScaler Cloud Gateway Orchestrates Delivery of SaaS, Web and Windows Apps

Today at Citrix Synergy™, where virtual computing takes center stage, Citrix announced NetScaler® Cloud Gateway, a new product that radically simplifies the delivery and management of apps and IT services. Today’s modern enterprise is aggressively adopting a new generation of cloud-based apps and SaaS services to achieve greater agility and improved economics. The hidden cost of migrating to these cloud services is an increasingly fragmented administration of applications, networks and security. The resulting number of application silos, identity management schemes, and access control processes increases cost and complexity. Cloud Gateway is a powerful solution that collapses and eliminates application silos, providing a unified entrance for seamless access and management of apps delivered from private or public clouds.

Cloud Gateway helps enterprise IT streamline traditional silo-based architectures in favor of a much simpler, service-oriented approach, designed to realize the “Power of One” - one place for users to get self-service access to any app, one login for any app or service, and one point of control for IT to enforce consistent policies for compliance, access control, auditing and quality of service (QoS). Cloud Gateway supports all leading browsers and all versions of Citrix Receiver™, a universal software client that provides users with easy, self-service access to all their apps from any PC, Mac, tablet or smart phone. Unlike other alternative offerings in this space, Cloud Gateway goes beyond SaaS and web apps to fully support seamless, secure access to any Windows app or desktop as well. Moreover, the Citrix Receiver client provides a rich, native device experience that goes beyond basic browser access with custom designed support for 1,000s of different devices, including innovative new products like the HP TouchPad, BlackBerry Playbook, and Google Chromebook.

When Microsoft announced its intention to acquire Skype two weeks ago, Steve Ballmer assured consumers that the company would continue to invest in and support Skype clients on non-Microsoft platforms.

"I said it and I mean," said Ballmer at the time. So how does today's news fit into that commitment?

Digium announced today that Skype is ending an agreement that allowed the company to incorporate Skype's technology into its open-source Asterisk software. Under the agreement, Asterisk and Skype developed propriety software that allowed Asterisk users access to the Skype network.

But in a letter to clients today, Digium said Skype for Asterisk will not be available for sale or activation after July 26, 2011.

Dell Innovation Driven By Customers

In a world where people increasingly depend on their phones, laptops and other connected devices, it’s only natural that they have their own opinions about what works and what doesn’t.

Fortunately for its customers, listening is an essential element for Dell. Putting that feedback into action is the next step, and it’s a formula that works.

Full of unique designs in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors, Dell’s online catalog offers an interesting twist on the traditional spectrum of devices. According to Dell’s Michael Tatelman, vice president and general manager, Consumer Sales and Marketing, most of the creative inspiration comes directly from its customers.

“Behind the scenes, Dell’s marketing group is organized into customer segments that include prosumers, families with kids, professionals, gamers and the 18–35 age group we call Gen Y,” he says. “Our development teams are immersed in the needs of those segments. We talk with customers all the time. It allows us to focus on the things that users really want from their computers and devices.”

It’s an approach that can be seen across Dell’s product lineup. The recent category-busting Inspiron duo is a new type of “convertible” PC: part tablet and part laptop. Its design was inspired largely by students who may need the mobility of a tablet for taking notes, a laptop for writing papers, and multimedia capabilities to handle music and movies.

HP Enables Engaging Experiences With New Retail Solutions

When today’s tech-savvy consumers connect to brands, they bring rising expectations for personalized, immersive experiences that rely heavily on the Web, social networking, mobile computing and real-time engagement.

Consumers are always on, always connected to a wide range of sources and information through a variety of devices, and are influenced by other consumers. Buying habits have evolved, incorporating a variety of digital channels and methods of interaction that span in-home experiences online, mobile applications on the go and in-person service. Retailers are expected to keep up.

But for some retailers, innovation has been an afterthought. Adopting the latest technology advancements has historically been a piecemeal proposition to address immediate pain points related to inventory management or streamlining sales transactions.

To address these needs, HP today announced a new generation of point-of-sale (POS) and kiosk systems to help retailers manage, secure and enhance the sales process at every consumer touch point.

According to Emily Dart, retail solutions marketing manager for HP’s Personal Systems Group, HP is prioritizing helping its retail customers to standardize on one system throughout their stores. In fact, the new HP rp5800 Retail System announced today was developed to do just that. Running Windows 7 Professional, Windows Embedded POSReady 2009 and Windows XP, the rp5800 boasts advanced point-of-sale performance, manageability and security features that fit into existing IT infrastructures and provide rich experiences for both sales associates and their customers. It features a variety of connectivity options, allowing the system to interface with digital signage, as well as a wide variety of peripherals, including receipt printers, monitors, cash drawers and scanners. The rp5800 is expected to be available worldwide early this summer.

Are your Mobile Workers Compromising your Security?

For many of today’s workers, using sites like Facebook and Twitter for personal communication has become second nature. Using these sites for work-related reasons is quickly becoming commonplace too, especially in remote working scenarios. According to a recent survey sponsored by Microsoft and conducted by Ipsos Public Affairs, when working remotely, 42 percent of information workers at small and midsized businesses (SMBs) use public social networking tools (Facebook, Twitter) to collaborate with colleagues.

It may not come as much of a surprise to you to hear that these public sites do not meet the same security and privacy protocols as in-house measures provide. Yet, less than one-third (29 percent) of SMB information workers report that their companies provide access to internal social networking tools.

What iPads Did To My Family -- A Year Later

About a year ago, I wrote my most popular post of all time: What iPads Did To My Family.

The timing was good: the iPad was just getting into people's hands, and people were interested in the intersection between brand new tech and how we all react to it. Yes, it's only been about a year ...

Best as I can figure, the post has been read more than 500,000 times. If you really want some fun, scroll through the 100+ comments.

I thought I owed people a follow-up post -- sort of a sequel to the story.

It's been a year -- what's changed?

The iPad Is Incremental

At the time, the heated debate was whether or not iPads could replace full-functioned desktops, laptops, etc. The answer -- at least in our household -- is most certainly "no".

For example, I have four students in my family -- three children plus my wife. There is jus no way you're going to voluntarily pick up an iPad to write a term paper, take online courseware, etc.

Sure, the iPad software is plenty functional, but the keyboard is for occasional use only. For me, I sometimes have to write stuff up while at home -- I use a traditional desktop or laptop for that.

That means that the aging fleet of PCs and laptops will stay for the time being -- albeit reduced somewhat in status and priority. No upgrades planned here anytime soon.

Microsoft - a lost tiger without Bill Gates

In 1969, when Bill Gates was in high school, an event occurred that set in motion the course of his life. At a time when computers were electronic giants costing millions of dollars to operate, a company in Seattle offered Bill’s high school the use of its computer.

A young Bill Gates was obsessed with the possibilities that the computer had to offer and along with high school classmate Paul Allen started writing software code and in 1975 launched Microsoft. By 1978 sales crossed $1 million USD.

From 1978 to 1981 revenues quadrupled from $4 million to $16 million. Soon Bill Gates became the singular face of Microsoft and was heralded by Time Magazine as a unique type of businessman, one who understood technology as well as corporate strategy.

Microsoft Windows was his brainchild and ever since its unveiling in 1983, Microsoft went on to become the world’s largest software company and its name has become synonymous with personal computers.

Spammers establish their own fake URL-shortening services for the first time ever, contributing to rising spam rates

Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced the publication of its May 2011 MessageLabs Intelligence Report. This month’s analysis reveals that, for the first time ever and as predicted by MessageLabs Intelligence in its Annual Security Predictions for 2011, spammers are establishing their own their own fake URL-shortening services to perform URL redirection. This new spamming activity has contributed to this month’s increase in spam by 2.9 percentage points, a rise that was also expected following the Rustock botnet takedown in March.

Under this scheme, shortened links created on these fake URL-shortening sites are not included directly in spam messages. Instead, the spam emails contain shortened URLs created on legitimate URL-shortening sites. These shortened URLs lead to a shortened-URL on the spammer’s fake URL-shortening Web site, which in turn redirects to the spammer’s own Web site

Creator of Xbox Blockbuster 'Fable' Blames Success on Baked Beans, Happy Accidents

Peter Molyneux, creator of the popular “Fable” gaming series and head of Microsoft Game Studios in Europe, recalls the highs and lows of a 22-year career in video games – a career that was just honored by two lifetime achievement awards.

Peter Molyneux, one of the video game industry’s most celebrated designers and the creative force behind hits such as “Fable,” “Populous” and “Dungeon Keeper,” credits much of his 22-year career to a happy accident involving baked beans.

It happened shortly after he graduated from university. Molyneux already had tried his hand at game design and business without much success, and was searching for a way to make ends meet. When the father of his then-girlfriend suggested he start a company that exported baked beans to the Middle East, he went for it.

He soon discovered the region didn’t have much of an appetite for baked beans. “It was a very hand-to-mouth existence,” said Molyneux, now the creative director of both Lionhead Studios and Microsoft Game Studios Europe. “I was eating more baked beans than I was actually selling.”

And then the accident: Commodore, creator of the popular Commodore 64 console, confused his floundering bean business, Taurus, with a software company called Torus. Commodore called up Molyneux and invited him to their head office, where they rolled out the red carpet and told him how eager they were to work with his company.
