IBM Study Identifies New Generation of Connected Health Devices

Consumers have a growing appetite for health and wellness devices, and this represents a burgeoning market opportunity for device manufacturers that has barely been tapped, according to a study from IBM (NYSE: IBM). The company also unveiled a list of possible wellness device innovations of the future, which have the potential to change how people live, exercise and interact with their healthcare provider over the next five years.

Increasingly, wellness devices will be used to fill the information gap for consumers that are relatively healthy, but need devices that provide information to help them gain greater control over their conditions and lead healthier lives. These devices will plan, predict and monitor information, feeding it directly to caregivers and clinicians as well as support networks. Users will interact with devices on their own terms, and connect them via broadband, wireless and wireline connections.

Gartner Says Worldwide IT Spending Is on Pace to Grow 7.1 Percent in 2011

Worldwide IT spending is on pace to grow 7.1 percent in 2011, according to the latest quarterly spending outlook by Gartner, Inc. Analysts have revised overall IT forecast spending growth in U.S. dollar terms, up from their first quarter update, when they projected 5.6 percent growth for 2011.

"It is a bit surprising that we have not seen a more significant impact on our global IT spending forecast as a results of the Japan earthquake and tsunami, but despite widespread concerns about disruptions to the supply of critical components in the initial aftermath of the natural disaster, there has not been a dramatic impact on overall IT spending," said Richard Gordon, research vice president at Gartner. "For 2011 as a whole, we expect Japan IT spending to be down in local currency, but we expect a positive growth trend to emerge in the second half of the year and continue into 2012."

News Corp sells Myspace, ending six-year saga

Reuters) - News Corp has sold Myspace for $35 million, a fraction of what it paid for the once-hot social media site even as a new generation of Web-based start-ups is enjoying sky-high valuations.

Advertising company Specific Media will team with the singer Justin Timberlake to acquire Myspace in a deal that caps a tumultuous period of ownership under Rupert Murdoch's News Corp, which swooped in to buy Myspace for $580 million in 2005.

At the time, Myspace was among the world's most popular websites, and News Corp's success in beating out rival Viacom Inc in a bidding war was viewed as a major victory for Murdoch. Since then, however, Facebook has eclipsed Myspace in popularity, and the deal has become a hard lesson in what can happen when a traditional media company imposes its will on a start-up.

It also shows how quickly audience -- and investor -- tastes can shift in the world of social networking. Indeed, Wednesday's deal contrasts sharply with the current frenzy over social media companies, including LinkedIn, Twitter and Groupon, among investors looking for the next big thing.

Tech wrap: Microsoft reaches for the cloud

Everyone seems to be gabbing about the “cloud” these days. Whether it’s Apple’s much-hyped iCloud service or the Amazon Cloud, the now-popular euphemism for web-based software services has become one of the tech world’s biggest buzz words. Microsoft joined in on the action today by unveiling a revamped web-based version of its popular Office suite of business software. But Microsoft’s main target here is not Apple or Amazon, but Google, which has stolen some of the software maker’s corporate customers in recent years with cheap, web-only alternatives.

With Office 365, customers will be able to access familiar applications such as Outlook email, Excel spreadsheets and SharePoint collaboration tools beyond the desktop on a variety of different devices wherever there is an Internet connection. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer touted the service’s online format and built-in conferencing tools as especially good for small and medium-sized businesses looking to save money. Microsoft has offered online versions of some of Outlook and some other applications to corporate clients for years, but increased competition seems to have spurred Microsoft’s latest push into the cloud.

India needs a New Revolution

India has achieved phenomenal success in becoming the world’s back-office. As Indians we like to believe that TCS, Infosys, Wipro and HCL are IT superstars but none of these companies have been able to move up the stack and create a Google, Apple or Microsoft. Most of the revenues of TCS, Infosys and Wipro come from outsourcing. It can be questioned whether these companies are “glorified BPOs”.

A recent study by a reputable research group states that Indian companies continue to display low levels of ambition, as measured by their commitment to research and development. India's spends 0.7% of its GDP on R&D and this is one-fourth the spending of the US, less than half of China's and lower than that of Brazil.

Intel Equipped to Lead Industry to Era of Exascale Computing

At the International Supercomputing Conference (ISC), Kirk Skaugen, Intel Corporation vice president and general manager of the Data Center Group, outlined the company’s vision to achieve ExaFLOP/s performance by the end of this decade. An ExaFLOP/s is quintillion computer operations per second, hundreds times more than today’s fastest supercomputers.

Reaching exascale levels of performance in the future will not only require the combined efforts of industry and governments, but also approaches being pioneered by the Intel® Many Integrated Core (Intel® MIC1) Architecture, according to Skaugen. Managing the explosive growth in the amount of data shared across the Internet, finding solutions to climate change, managing the growing costs of accessing resources such as oil and gas, and a multitude of other challenges require increased amounts of computing resources that only increasingly high-performing supercomputers can address.

Worldwide mobile advertising revenue is forecast to reach $3.3 billion in 2011, more than double the $1.6 billion generated in 2010, according to Gartner, Inc. Scientists Unfolding Protein Mystery, Fighting Disease with Windows Azure

Cloud computing is helping biologists uncloud one of nature’s biggest mysteries: proteins.

Microsoft has partnered with the University of Washington’s Baker Laboratory, one of the world’s top computational biology labs, to give scientists access to some high-caliber computing power. That, in turn, helps them explore and understand proteins, which could eventually lead to thwarting everything from Alzheimer's to Malaria, and from cancer to salmonella.

Proteins turn from random coils into functional three-dimensional structures by folding themselves. Once folded, proteins become the building blocks and workhorses of the body. Some of the most harrowing modern diseases are linked to this process and when proteins fail to fold correctly.

Accelerating Your Journey to Microsoft Virtualization

Last month at Microsoft TechEd 2011, I presented the topic of Accelerating Your Journey to the Private Cloud based on Microsoft virtualization and EMC technologies. Below is a recap of this presentation, the full audio version and slides can be found at the Microsoft TechEd website or a replay of this presentation is also available at the Windows IT Pro website. First it is important to understand the phases that EMC believes all companies go through when virtualizing their datacenter, regardless of the technologies used or the size of the company. The journey to virtualization consists of three phases which are related to the amount of virtualization that has occurred. The first phase consists of virtualizing IT Production applications. In this first phase customers begin virtualizing and expand this to include up to 30% of their workloads. The second phase involves virtualizing Business Production applications as companies virtualize up to 50% to 85% of their environment. The third phase is IT as a Service and allows companies to run IT as a business with 95% or more virtualization in the environment.

Startup Killer: the Cost of Customer Acquisition

In the many thousands of articles advising entrepreneurs on what they have to focus on to build successful startups, much has been written about three key factors: team, product and market, with particular focus on the importance of product/market fit. Failure to get product/market fit right is very likely the number 1 cause of startup failure. However in all these articles, I have not seen any discussion about what I believe is the second biggest cause of startup failure: the cost of acquiring customers turns out to be higher than expected, and exceeds the ability to monetize those customers.

How the Apple iCloud compares to Google's cloud

Apple and Google now dominate the world's smartphone and mobile device markets and both are now pushing quickly into the cloud. While Apple this week finally acknowledged the cloud as the future of computing -- and will finally allow iPads and iPhones to be set up and backed up without being tethered to a computer running iTunes -- many Google fans accurately note that Apple's iCloud doesn't bring a lot of new features to the table.

The truth is that Apple seems a little late in endorsing the cloud as the new center of our digital world. After all, cloud computing has played a growing role in the tech industry for years.

Gartner Says India Printer Copier and Multifunctional Product Market Declined 2.5 Percent In The First Quarter Of 2011

The combined serial inkjet and page printer, copier and multifunction product (MFP) market in India totaled 6,65,172 units in the first quarter of 2011, a 2.5 percent decline compared to the first quarter of 2010, according to Gartner, Inc.

“The revision in IT budgets towards the end of the fiscal year 2010 led to controlled purchasing of print devices and IT hardware spending,” said Amrita Choudhury research analyst at Gartner. “However, the future outlook is positive. Purchasing will beef up in the coming months as economic activities will resume momentum.”

Fake Anti-Virus Imitates Microsoft Update, Warns Sophos

IT security and data protection firm, Sophos, is warning Windows users about the latest fake anti-virus attack, which tricks users into installing malicious software, by posing as a Microsoft security update.

Affected users will see an almost exact replica of the real Microsoft update page - the only difference being that the bogus page appears while surfing with Firefox, whereas the genuine Microsoft update site requires Internet Explorer.

Sophos has found that fake anti-virus attacks have become more sophisticated and professional in their appearance, convincing more innocent computer users into making bad decisions. The use of high quality graphics and professional interfaces means that there is a risk that more users are likely to fall for the scams.

A Cloud Evolved?

As any industry trend plows through the landscape, you can frequently spot key events where the discussion quickly evolves from one phase to the next.

I believe such an event happened today. The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) announced their new
Capital Markets Community Platform -- essentially, a cloud service for financial traders.

Yes, EMC and VMware were prominently mentioned in the announcement. That shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.

More interesting is that it adds additional (and highly visible) evidence that external cloud services will compete on being better - and not necessarily just cheaper - than in-house alternatives.

With this announcement, I believe the general perception of external cloud services is changing -- fast.

Gartner Says PC Unit Growth in 2011 will Slow to 9.3 Percent as Consumers in Mature Markets Remain Cautious

Worldwide PC unit growth is projected to be slightly weaker in 2011 than the previous projection, according to Gartner, Inc.'s latest forecast. PC shipments are expected to grow 9.3 percent in 2011, reaching 385 million units. This is slightly lower than Gartner's previous projection of 10.5 percent growth for this year.

Throughout much of the last decade, PC unit growth was powered by consumers. With consumers from mature markets maintaining a tight rein on their spending in response to continuing economic uncertainty, and a lack of compelling reasons for consumers in general to replace their PCs, PC unit growth has slowed and must once again rely on businesses to drive it.

India Public Cloud Computing To Grow At 53 Per Cent CAGR

The Public Cloud Computing market in India is estimated to touch Rs. 2,434 crore in 2014 after growing at a CAGR of 53% between 2010-2014 according to market intelligence and advisory firm CyberMedia Research’s India Cloud Computing Market Review 2011, May 2011 edition.

According to Kamal Vohra, Lead Analyst, India Software and IT Services Research, CyberMedia Research, “Cloud computing is witnessing widespread interest from the vendor-service provider-channel community on the one hand and business leaders and CIOs on the other. This is fuelled by the strong belief that cloud computing will allow a large number of SMB enterprises to adopt the same enterprise class software and technology solutions, which were earlier the exclusive preserve of large enterprises. This, in turn is expected to allow the market for software solutions to open up as large, upfront capital investments in IT infrastructure can be converted into smaller, manageable 'pay-per-use' annuity payments."

Hot on the Trail of the Rustock Botnet

In March, we announced that Microsoft had, with the help of industry partners and law enforcement, taken down the notorious spamming botnet, Rustock.

Since that time, I’m happy to report that the botnet has stayed dead. Our technical countermeasures have worked effectively to prevent the bot’s self-defense mechanisms from reanimating it. Moreover, in the months since the takedown, we’ve seen the number of infected IP addresses (a loose proxy for the number of infected computers) decline as more and more people update their software or get malware removed from their PCs.

Gartner Says 15 Percent of Enterprises Will Adopt Layered Fraud Prevention Techniques by 2014

By 2014, 15 percent of enterprises will adopt layered fraud prevention techniques for their internal systems to compensate for weaknesses inherent in using only authentication methods, according to Gartner, Inc.

Gartner analysts said no single layer of fraud prevention or authentication is enough to keep determined fraudsters out of enterprise systems. Multiple layers must be employed to defend against today's attacks and those that have yet to appear.

"Malware-based attacks against bank customers and company employees are levying severe reputational and financial damage on their victims. They are fast becoming a prevalent tool for attacking customer and corporate accounts, and stealing sensitive information or funds," said Avivah Litan, vice president and distinguished analyst at Gartner. "Fighting these and future types of attacks requires a layered fraud prevention approach."

Cloud Computing: A Sustaining or Disruptive Innovation?

If you've read this blog over the past couple of years, it should be no surprise that I am a huge advocate of the theories of Clayton Christensen, author of "The Innovator's Dilemma." Christensen and his book were brought to mind this week by the cover story in Forbes about his severe health problems, his experience with the U..S healthcare system, and his prescriptions for how to fix it.

Christensen posits two type of innovation: sustaining and disruptive. Sustaining innovation is that which extends existing technologies, improving them incrementally. As an example, at one point auto manufacturing moved from body-on-frame to unibody construction. Christensen points out that it is very difficult for a new market entrant to gain traction with an incremental innovation, since the market incumbents can easily incorporate the new technology while maintaining their other advantages like brand awareness, cost efficiency, and so on.

By contrast, disruptive innovation represents entirely new technology solutions that bring a new twist to an existing market — typically at a far lower price point. Christensen offers numerous examples of disruptive innovation; for instance, transistor radios disrupted the existing market for vacuum tube-based radios. Christensen notes that typically, disruptive innovations come to market and are considered inadequate substitutes for existing solutions by the largest users of those solutions. Tube radio manufacturers evaluated transistor capability and found that transistors could not run table radios with large speakers that required significant power to generate sound volume.

Consequently, disruptive innovations must seek out new users who are, in Christensen's term, overserved by existing solutions and are willing to embrace less capable, cheaper offerings. Transistor radios were first embraced by teenagers who wanted to listen to rock and roll with their friends and wouldn't be caught dead listening to it in the company of their parents, at home, in front of the vacuum tube-powered table radio. They didn't mind that their cheap transistor radios sounded tinny. They were affordable and allowed teenagers to listen to their music in the company of friends.

Groupon: Doomed to Fail or Worth a Leap?

Among those debating the value of Groupon as it filed for its hotly-awaited initial public offering — which could give it a market capitalization as high as $30 billion — were two startup entrepreneurs who took to Twitter on Thursday night. On the “Groupon is doomed to fail” side of the question was David Heinemeier Hansson, a partner at 37signals and creator of Ruby on Rails, and on the “give Groupon a chance” side of the debate was SimpleGeo co-founder Joe Stump. Who won? You will have to judge for yourself. Their conversation is embedded below.

Hansson started the debate by tearing apart Groupon’s financials, noting that the company had not only lost more than $500 million so far, but that its losses and spending were actually accelerating, and that it was costing the company far more than $1 to make $1 in revenue — a fundamentally unsustainable situation. After a series of tweets on that topic, Stump joined the debate by saying Groupon should get some credit for being able to generate revenues of $600 million or so every quarter, and that this would give the company some breathing room to figure out how to generate a profit.

Can Big Data Change The World?

I'm seeing a common pattern emerge when anyone sits down to fully contemplate the widespread adoption of big data technology and techniques.

You get sucked into the mind-blowing potential. Like a space traveler wandering too close to a black hole, you get drawn in, and all of the sudden your universe appears very different.

You quickly move beyond the pragmatic: getting better answers to queries, or reducing costs, or being more profitable.

Instead, you start to see the glimmering potential to literally change the world.

And the mind can boggle.

Groupon files its IPO papers

Groupon, helping to blow more air into the growing tech bubble, filed today for an initial public offering with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The daily-deals company says it wants to raise $750 million and has hired Morgan Stanley, Credit Suisse, and Goldman Sachs as its bankers. That number can, and often does, change from the first IPO filing papers. And Groupon did not include information about the number of shares it intends to sell, which would give a valuation for the company itself. Some reports say Groupon could be valued at between $20 billion and $25 billion.

Legacy Digital Book Site Comes Alive With HTML5 in Internet Explorer 9

When the team behind the latest Tron:Legacy Project project website started their work, they had in mind one goal: raise the bar for what a graphic novel could be like online. “Most online comics are stagnant,” says Dario Di Zanni, development manager for Disney publishing digital media. “We wanted an engaging, fluid site that is more like the actual experience of reading a comic book.”

Originally released by Disney in 1982, the classic science-fiction film “Tron” has spawned comics, games, books and a television series based on the story of protagonist Sam, who is investigating his father’s disappearance 20 years earlier. Sam’s quest takes him on a solo journey through his father’s digital legacy.
