Skype cuts ties to open-source Asterisk platform

When Microsoft announced its intention to acquire Skype two weeks ago, Steve Ballmer assured consumers that the company would continue to invest in and support Skype clients on non-Microsoft platforms.

"I said it and I mean," said Ballmer at the time. So how does today's news fit into that commitment?

Digium announced today that Skype is ending an agreement that allowed the company to incorporate Skype's technology into its open-source Asterisk software. Under the agreement, Asterisk and Skype developed propriety software that allowed Asterisk users access to the Skype network.

But in a letter to clients today, Digium said Skype for Asterisk will not be available for sale or activation after July 26, 2011.
